Mudgee family lawyers who take a practical approach
The Mudgee region’s mix of agriculture, mining, wine and tourism means many families have income and assets that aren’t straightforward: rosters and overtime, farm and vineyard holdings, small businesses and investment property. We help you understand how these are treated in a property settlement or child support assessment.
Just as importantly, we help parents focus on the children, with parenting arrangements that work around school, sport and shift work.
Our team is led locally by Special Counsel Julie Vass and backed by ALA Law’s Accredited Family Law Specialists, so even complex matters are in experienced hands.

CarlyFamily law questions from Mudgee clients
Do I need to travel to see a family lawyer?
Not necessarily. Most of our Mudgee clients meet with us by phone or video, and we share and review documents securely online. If you’d prefer to meet face to face, we see clients in Orange and Dubbo, by appointment only.
How is mining or shift-work income treated for child support?
Child support is usually assessed by Services Australia using each parent’s adjusted taxable income, which can include overtime, allowances and bonuses. If your income changes a lot or the formula doesn’t reflect your situation, there are ways to seek a change of assessment. We can help you understand the options.
Where is the nearest Family Court to Mudgee?
The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia holds circuit sittings in Orange and has a registry in Dubbo. You can file most documents online through the Commonwealth Courts Portal, and the Court holds many hearings by video.
Is superannuation included in a property settlement?
Yes. Superannuation is treated as property under the Family Law Act and can be split between separating couples, whether married or de facto. Splitting super doesn’t usually mean cash in hand, as the funds generally stay in the super system.
How long after separation can I get a divorce?
You must be separated for at least 12 months before applying for a divorce. You can be separated while still living under the same roof, but you’ll need extra evidence. If you’ve been married for less than two years, you’ll usually need to attend counselling first or get the Court’s permission.
Is there a time limit for a property settlement?
Yes. Married couples generally have 12 months from the date their divorce becomes final, and de facto couples have two years from separation. After that you need the Court’s permission, so it’s best to get advice early.
