Family law support across the Lachlan Valley
From Cowra and Woodstock to Gooloogong, Wyangala and Darbys Falls, we help families across the Lachlan Valley. Most of our Cowra clients work with us by phone and video, and we can meet in person in Orange whenever that helps.
Cowra family lawyers who keep things practical
Separation affects everything, from where the children live to who keeps the house, the farm or the business. In the Cowra district that can mean irrigated farmland, water entitlements, livestock and family companies, as well as superannuation and investments. We help you understand where you stand and the most practical path to a fair outcome.
For parents, we focus on arrangements that put the children first and work in real life, including school, sport and the travel between homes.
Our team is led locally by Special Counsel Julie Vass and supported by ALA Law’s Accredited Family Law Specialists, so you get specialist family law expertise without travelling to the city.

CarlyFamily law questions from Cowra clients
Do I need to travel to see a family lawyer?
Not necessarily. Most of our Cowra clients meet with us by phone or video, and we share and review documents securely online. If you’d prefer to meet face to face, we see clients at our Orange office by appointment.
Where is the nearest Family Court to Cowra?
The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia holds circuit sittings in Orange and has a registry in Dubbo. You can file most documents online through the Commonwealth Courts Portal, and many hearings are now held by video.
Where are AVOs dealt with in Cowra?
Apprehended domestic violence orders are dealt with by the Local Court. Cowra Local Court is on the corner of Kendal and Brisbane Streets. If you’re in immediate danger, call 000.
Are water entitlements included in a property settlement?
Yes. Water entitlements, like land and machinery, are property and need to be valued and included in a property settlement. We can help make sure they’re dealt with correctly.
Is there a 50/50 custody rule in Australia?
No. There is no automatic 50/50 rule. The Court’s focus is what is in the child’s best interests, including their safety and their relationship with each parent. Many families agree on shared arrangements that work for them, and we can help you reach one.
Is there a time limit for a property settlement?
Yes. Married couples have 12 months from the date their divorce becomes final, and de facto couples have two years from separation, to apply for property orders without the Court’s permission.
